Scholarships raise awareness for substance abuse and recovery

— The Summit WAPS-FM introduces the Rock and Recovery™ Scholarship Program, a new opportunity for high school seniors in the Akron Public School district focused on raising awareness for substance abuse and recovery issues.

College – and career-bound high school seniors whose lives have been impacted will be invited to share their creative voices this spring as part of the unique application process.

Local man brings suicide awareness with Akron’s refugee community

A case worker at the International Institute is tired of seeing the depression, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts that overwhelm some of his fellow Bhutanese in Akron. The suicide rate among refugees is nearly double what it is for U.S.-born residents, says Amber Subba, (pronounced Ahm-ber), who is co-hosting a “Stop Suicide” event Feb. 28, 1 p.m. at North High School. The event will include live music, and local mental health professionals will attend to spread the message that help is available for residents battling with depression.

Strong Reentry Network Growing in Summit County (Part Six)

The Reentry Program in Summit County continues to grow and improve, according to Bernie Rochfield, executive vice president of Oriana House.

Rochfield, involved in reentry work for the past 30 years, has witnessed first-hand how things have progressed.

“Things have grown so much, even in just the last 2 ½ -3 years,” Terry Tribe Johnson, Summit County Reentry Coordinator, agreed.
