East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp. StormWaterColors project selected as national finalist for placemaking funding

 

East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation’s (EANDC) StormWaterColors project proposal is one of 70 finalists for ArtPlace America’s 2017 National Creative Placemaking Fund (NCPF).

ArtPlace selected these 70 proposals from 987 applications, making EANDC’s project one of just 7 percent of the projects across the country to make this cut.

Gary Wyatt shares his path of redemption, commitment and leadership

Gary Wyatt has been on both sides of the addiction divide. Speaking to a Leadership on Main audience, the co-founder of North Hill Community House told a compelling story of personal redemption and commitment, and surprisingly to himself, leadership.

As a child, he saw his parents’ struggles with alcoholism and poverty. When he was a student and an athlete at Garfield High School, he did a “little alcohol and a little pot” now and then, he said, but never anything that got him into trouble. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school to see the world, served four years and returned to Akron in 1989.

Portland community leader shares placemaking with Akron

GAINS hosts meeting on ways and places to bring people together in the community

Mark Lakeman, founder of Portland City Repair, saw a lack of communal meeting places in his community. Now his city has made changes in their infrastructure to bring community members together.

Lakeman brought his knowledge of placemaking to the March 9 meeting of The Great Akron Innovation Network for Sustainability, or GAINS, hosted in the Summit Artspace in collaboration with Big Love Fest.

GAINS is a volunteer organization that promotes sustainability in the Greater Akron area, while Big Love Fest is an event that celebrates culture, art and music in the Akron community.

You may have heard about the growing Akron2Akron movement, which organizes monthly walking tours of Akron neighborhoods, led by local residents.

The walks have attracted people of all ages and all backgrounds, and they have been a great way to connect with other people, to get to know your own neighborhood better, and to get to know another neighborhood that you may not be as familiar with.
