More rooms. More families. More hope. And Hard Hat Tours.

Ronald McDonald House of Akron extends their appreciation to all who have accepted their offer to attend a hard hat tour of its expanded facility in Akron, Ohio. Community members are encouraged to continue to schedule tours through the fall months.

Originally opened in 1985, the house has provided a supportive home-away-from home for families receiving medical treatment at Akron Children’s Hospital. The hospital has become the largest pediatric health care provider in Northeast Ohio. In 2016, Ronald McDonald House of Akron served over 12,000 people, but had to turn away more than 4,000 families.

Children Services awards 2017 ‘Champions for Children’

 

Summit County Children Services, with support of its Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC), recently hosted the 8th Annual Community Appreciation Breakfast to recognize and thank volunteers, businesses, organizations and community leaders for their support of Summit County Children Services and the children and families in Summit County.  The slogan for this year’s Child and Family Awareness Month was “A Family is the Sunshine in My Day.”

Key Steps to Reading Success program improves children’s reading abilities

Summit Education Initiative (SEI) knows that:

  • schools want to engage families;
  • families want their children to be successful; and
  • books at home make a difference in children’s learning and development

 

Along with SEI, Shelley Houser, a literacy coach for The University of Akron Center for Literacy, had to determine how to incorporate all three ideals into one program. The goal? Reduce the number of children in need of a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan (RIMP) across Summit County.

The Akron Community Foundation (ACF) hosted a community issues session on how schools and non-profits work together to improve education Wednesday, January 25.
The foundation hosts a similar session each quarter to highlight organizations within their target areas, said Teresa LeGrair, director of Community Investment at the Akron Community Foundation. This quarter the focus is on education.

SEI guides 16 for Success kit training for community partner

While the bulk of Summit Education Initiative (SEI)’s work occurs behind-the-scenes, sometimes face-to-face conversation and in-person demonstrations best represent our support for community partners and their work.

In fall 2016, Dr. Matthew Deevers, senior research associate at SEI, joined the International Institute of Akron (IIA)’s education department for a series of 16 for Success kit training sessions with local families. While the dialogue and activity in each session helps teach parents how to use different aspects of the kit, the ultimate goal of the training is to help their children begin kindergarten on track for success.
