Summit County Children Services’ Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC) recently hosted its 7th Annual Community Appreciation Breakfast to recognize and thank volunteers, businesses, organizations and community leaders – as well as families served by the agency – for their support of children and families.
The Duvall Awards, established in 2008 through a partnership of Summit County Children Services, the Akron Police Department and Akron Children’s Hospital, honor the memory of the late Lt. John “Ed” Duvall, Jr. – who, while with the Akron Police Department, was both relentless in his investigations of child abuse cases and deeply committed to speaking out about child abuse prevention. Monthly breakfasts support various
sectors of the marketplace

The Love Akron Network hosts Love Akron Connect on the last Wednesday of every month. These prayer breakfasts bring communities members together to support each other.
Each breakfast is held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Akron and focuses on a different sector of the marketplace. In February, the focus was healthcare. Love Akron invited employees from various healthcare-related organizations in the Akron area.

Early Childhood Initiative Helps Parents and Children with an Early Start to Education Part 2

Children growing up in poverty have a different set of challenges than their more affluent peers. The Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, or AMHA, believes their access to these children gives them an unique opportunity to help.
AMHA’s Early Childhood Initiative, or ECI, has gained national attention for their innovative approach to helping children within their system. We continue the story about AMHA’s work with the children and their parents who live in AMHA housing.

Although Sue Meyer, Medical Director, and her husband began the clinic, she says “This has been something that has been encouraged and helped by a ton of people to come into fruition.”
Local hospitals, churches, businesses and tradesmen have all played a part in this beautiful facility coming together.
“The facility was basically made over by contractors that volunteered their time. Paint stores that gave us paint. Pretty much what you see here, 98% of it was donated,” Meyer said.
Volunteers gave of themselves and their time, without expecting anything in return, to care for those who are truly in need.
