Sasha Miller hosted Permaculture Akron’s August meet-up for an active demonstration of her Purplebrown Farm’s foray into growing edible mushrooms.

“Purplebrown Farmstead joined the Countryside Initiative Program in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 2016. Our approach is to apply an intensive permaculture design process to develop a long term vision for these 12 acres.  We are growing a resilient and productive food forest, including cider apples, diverse fruits & nuts, herbs, flowers, mushrooms, and livestock.  We are host community events throughout the year, focused on community, permaculture, education and recreation.”

OPEN M provides Christmas for the Love of Children

On Wednesday, December 19th, OPEN M will once again open its doors for their “Christmas for the Love of Children” program. Each year OPEN M partners with the Akron Public Schools counselors to identify the most in-need families within the district. This year over 580 children in nearly 200 different families were identified through APS, as well as OPEN M’s internal programing. Continue reading

Project Rise hosts 11th Annual Harvest Dinner for Local Families Experiencing Homelessness

 

This November, Project Rise and Kenmore-Garfield High School hosted the 11th Annual Project Rise Harvest Dinner for the students and families experiencing homelessness. The Harvest Dinner gives these families and youth the opportunity to celebrate this festive time of year with food, fun and friendship. The evening included arts and literacy activities, parent-child activities, Thanksgiving dinner, giveaways, and entertainment. Altogether, around 125 attendees enjoyed the special evening!

On February 26th, the annual Project Rise Parent RISE-ing Soul food dinner was held at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, serving students and families experiencing homelessness. For the past 8 years, Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church has graciously hosted the event for families served by Project Rise.

East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp. StormWaterColors project selected as national finalist for placemaking funding

 

East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation’s (EANDC) StormWaterColors project proposal is one of 70 finalists for ArtPlace America’s 2017 National Creative Placemaking Fund (NCPF).

ArtPlace selected these 70 proposals from 987 applications, making EANDC’s project one of just 7 percent of the projects across the country to make this cut.
