The Summit announces Rock and Recovery scholarship program for Akron Public Schools seniors

Scholarships raise awareness for substance abuse and recovery

— The Summit WAPS-FM introduces the Rock and Recovery™ Scholarship Program, a new opportunity for high school seniors in the Akron Public School district focused on raising awareness for substance abuse and recovery issues.

College – and career-bound high school seniors whose lives have been impacted will be invited to share their creative voices this spring as part of the unique application process.

The scholarships were established through several donations to The Summit’s Rock and Recovery™ program, a streaming and on-air community service intervention introduced by the station in 2011. The application offers a platform for young adults wishing to share their personal recovery stories and insights.

Students who know or love someone impacted by substance abuse, addiction or mental health challenges—or have experienced it themselves—may submit their recovery stories in several formats. Essays or poems, original recorded songs and works of art on paper will be reviewed by a scholarship panel, and one-time scholarships will be awarded to two students entering a college or career-track institution in the fall of 2018.

Yvonne Culver, coordinator of School Counseling and College and Career Services for Akron Public Schools, said, “The Rock and Recovery™ scholarship rewards two areas that often go unnoticed with purely academic criteria–creativity and resiliency. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to use difficulties as a springboard to move forward.”

Winning and select applicant entries will be shared across the station’s multiple Rock+Recovery™ distribution platforms and on The Summit airwaves. For info and details on how to apply, email wwbdconsulting@gmail.com or yculver@apslearns.org.

Rock and Recovery™ dedicated to sharing real voices of recovery, resources and thoughtfully curated, upbeat rock songs to raise awareness, reduce stigma and offer hope for individuals and their families struggling with addiction and mental health trauma. The program airs nightly from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and is accessible 24/7/365 on rockandrecovery.com.

The Summit 91.3 FM Akron/Canton and 90.7 FM Youngstown/Warren/Western Pennsylvania is a listener-supported independent voice, inspiring its community with diverse music and community service. Visit www.thesummit.fm,  www.rockandrecovery.com,  www.kidjamradio.com  or www.the330.net.
