More rooms. More families. More hope. And Hard Hat Tours.

Ronald McDonald House of Akron extends their appreciation to all who have accepted their offer to attend a hard hat tour of its expanded facility in Akron, Ohio. Community members are encouraged to continue to schedule tours through the fall months.

Originally opened in 1985, the house has provided a supportive home-away-from home for families receiving medical treatment at Akron Children’s Hospital. The hospital has become the largest pediatric health care provider in Northeast Ohio. In 2016, Ronald McDonald House of Akron served over 12,000 people, but had to turn away more than 4,000 families.

To meet the needs of families, a $12.5 million two-phase building campaign to add 42 new rooms to the house is underway. More living and social areas, with updated amenities, are also planned which will afford more families the chance to stay close to their child during hospital stays.

More than 125 people from community organizations, board of directors, government, corporations, medical practices, hospitals, chambers of commerce, and other associations interested in learning more about the house have toured since late May. A sampling of tour groups include CREW, Huntington Bank, Hartville Hardware, The Love Akron Network, Liberty HealthShare Coalition, Hattie Larlham, Robert W. Baird, Corbin Foundation, Kent State University, Boys & Girls Clubs, and many community individuals.

The 135 core volunteers who assist at the house each month welcome all interested in learning about their activities. The home features private bedrooms and baths, comfortable gathering spaces, playrooms for the children, and laundry facilities to families from 40 Ohio counties, 23 states, and 10 countries. Home cooked meals are offered every day. The grand opening of the expanded space is expected to take place in January, 2018.

The Ronald McDonald House of Akron was founded by families for the purpose of providing a temporary house for those who have loved ones at Akron Children’s Hospital. Because of the vision and commitment of William Considine, president and CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of Akron (RMH) was built on a promise of supporting families during one of the most difficult times of their lives. RMH is used by families who do not have or can’t afford a place to stay when their child is at the hospital. No family is turned away for lack of funds.

To schedule a tour, learn additional details, or support the expansion project with a donation, please contact Aristea Tzouloufis at 330-253-5400 or email her at Visit Ronald McDonald House Akron on-line at

  1. Seeking information regarding New/Under Construction Senior Apartment Building I believe it is to face East Market Street. Sits where the old Sokol Furniture was previously. Article ran in the Beacon. For whatever reason, I am having trouble finding it on line. I have friends who this project would benefit greatly. They need to get signed up as soon as possible. Can you forward information to me.

  2. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.
