The Akron Community Foundation (ACF) hosted a community issues session on how schools and non-profits work together to improve education Wednesday, January 25.
The foundation hosts a similar session each quarter to highlight organizations within their target areas, said Teresa LeGrair, director of Community Investment at the Akron Community Foundation. This quarter the focus is on education.

World Relief Akron welcomes refugees into the community

Volunteer Marissa Dove drove up to the North Hill house on a rainy morning. She volunteers with World Relief Akron, a local refugee agency, and had stopped to pick up a Bhutanese-Nepali family that had just arrived in the United States a few days prior.

The father, mother and two young boys were running late, like so many families with young kids. The youngest was crying. He had gotten sick overnight. They climbed into the SUV and Dove helped get him into the car seat. His mother rubbed his legs to comfort him as they drove downtown.

Children services offers free training sessions on recognizing child abuse and neglect

 

State law requires that preschools and day care centers have a person trained in child abuse recognition and prevention on staff at all times. To help area child care providers fulfill this requirement, Summit County Children Services (SCCS) is once again offering area child care employees free trainings in child abuse and neglect recognition and prevention.

Juwana Owens never experiences a dull moment with her mentee, Takiyah Anderson.

“She refers to herself as ‘the life of the party,’” Owens says with a smile.

When she first joined iC.A.R.E. Mentoring, a program of United Way of Summit County, as an AmeriCorps VISTA in August 2016, Owens didn’t know what to expect during her first lunchtime session with Takiyah and, later, her older sister Takiera, at Roswell Kent Middle School in Akron.
