Pastoral Counseling Service (PCS), Highland Square
Pastoral Counseling Service (PCS) is open for business at its new location at 611 W. Market St. in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood.
The agency provides mental health and addiction treatment services for children and adults. The new location consolidates PCS administrative offices, formerly located on Bowery Street and the Barbara M. Vassel Comprehensive Care Center, formerly located on Park Street.
The new building also provides a home base for the nearly 150 PCS employees who provide therapy and case management services throughout greater Akron, including school-based therapy programs in the Akron Public Schools, as well as several other districts and schools located throughout the area.

“This is an exciting time for PCS,” said Rev. Dr. Byron Arledge, president and CEO. “Our new building and its location will allow us to better meet the needs of our current clients and put us in a position to expand services to even more.”
Visitors and Vassel Center clients may park for free off of West Market Street. The building is also located on two bus routes – West Market Street #1 and Merriman Road #28.
PCS improves the mental health of individuals and their family members by offering counseling, case management, psychiatric and addiction services. PCS provides these services in local school districts, the Vassel Center outpatient clinic and within aging services organizations. PCS is incorporated as a private, nonprofit organization, and has been in existence in the greater Akron community since 1963.
Through the years, PCS has been recognized as a strong advocate of children, youth and families, continually exploring innovative ways of making professional therapeutic services available. PCS is certified through the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and is accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
