More than 200 volunteers from Foresters Financial, United Way of Summit County, the city of Akron organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Akron community will join forces on Saturday, June 18, to give area kids the childhood they deserve by building a new playground at Suddieth Park in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood.
The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in April.
To add to the excitement and thrill of build day, National Football League players and Akron natives Doran Grant, cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Shaquille Riddick, outside linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals and Devin Smith, wide receiver for the New York Jets will join in the day’s events to support the work of United Way and help give back to their home community.
The playground build will take place 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include a Foresters Family Fun Zone (arts & crafts, games & more for children and families) and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate playground.
Suddieth Park (Named for John L. Suddieth, the first African American officer hired by the Akron Police Department) is located at Carpenter Street and West Mildred Avenue.
Over its 15-year lifespan, the new playground will eventually serve more than 1,900 children and their families in the community, providing them with a safe place to play.
This year, Foresters and KaBOOM! are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their partnership. Since 2006, Foresters has invested more than $11.5 million with KaBOOM! to build more than 130 playgrounds – including nine in Ohio – across the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2016. Over their 15-year lifespan, these playgrounds will strengthen the community and provide more than 4.5 million children and their families with an opportunity to spend quality time together.
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan also will be in attendance in the morning.
