Horizon House: Hope for Homeless Young Adults Part 1 – 2010-12-10

A young man living in a tent, in the freezing cold, wore a University of Akron sweatshirt. He hoped to become a student, but that dream died due to unfortunate circumstances.

Many homeless adults once dreamt of making something of themselves…all they needed was a chance, an opportunity to become great.

We are all given one life to live, but what if that life gets a bad start, with seemingly no opportunity to succeed?

Crown Point Ecology Center: Celebrating Each Season – 2010-11-30

As the autumn leaves fall, it’s a picture perfect moment at Crown Point Ecology Center (CPEC). With farmland stretching for miles, it welcomes the public to come enjoy all it has to offer.

The property, purchased by The Dominican Sisters of Peace in 1967, offers a vast display of nature’s wonders. Over 10,000 people are touched by this program each year, including many served by the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank.

“Every season is wonderful. One of the neatest things to me is seeing the farm in each of its seasons,” Ellen Otto, Advancement Coordinator, smiled.

Pastoral Counseling Services: Partnering with Local Schools to Keep Kids in School – 2010-11-15

Yesterday morning a young man about 17 years old, with sagging pants and a baggy sweatshirt approached my car outside of my apartment complex. I rolled down the window, he said he was stranded and needed money to get back to the West Side of Akron.

As I drove away from this young man, several thoughts flooded my mind, including ‘Why isn’t he in school?’ and ‘What is this teenager doing in an apartment complex that has ‘No Trespassing’ signs?’

It’s that time of year again. You know that when the weather gets a little cooler and the leaves begin to change colors and fall; great men of God are ready to stand up.

Once a year men gather in Akron for Iron Sharpens Iron, a national conference for men, by men, targeting the aspects of leadership and the role of men in the church and family.

Targeted at ages 13 and up, it covers issues for all stages of life.

Project Rise: 
Life’s NOT Over! Part Three – 2010-10-18

The drama, “Life’s Not Over”, was woven together beautifully…

“I was just amazed to watch it all develop. It was just something that was inspired; that was being revealed,” Debra Manteghi, District Homeless Education Liaison and Program Manager with Akron Public Schools, said.

The cast agreed.

“God set things up,” Nellie Taylor, a.k.a. Ms. Hubert in the play, said.

Myrna Johnson, the Narrator, met Tyron Hoisten, the writer of the script, when he was just 15 years old.
